Associate Professor of American Studies, UC Davis
Professional Bio:

Grace Wang is Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of California, Davis and the author of "Soundtracks of Asian America: Navigating Race through Musical Performance."

Area of Expertise:

I have research expertise in three overlapping areas: race and ethnicity in the United States; Asian American musical performance and culture; and global understandings of race, particularly in connection to U.S.-China relations. A key feature of my research is to understand the coded mechanisms of race in the contemporary context, from understanding the racial logic of seemingly race-neutral terms like talent, creativity, and technicality to analyzing how race functions in contexts in which it is assumed not to exist. I have written extensively about how ideas about race circulate in a range of contexts, including the global circulation of Western classical music, music performance on YouTube, Chinese pop music in Asia, and reality television.
